Chapter Profiles GlobeMed at University of Michigan
Our Partner - Tiyatien Health - Zwedru, Liberia | Joy-Southfield Community Development Corporation - Detroit, Michigan.
Tiyatien Health is a non-profit social organization that works in partnership with communities in rural Liberia and the Liberian government to promote equity by advancing healthcare services and the fundamental rights of the poor.
The Joy-Southfield Health and Education Center provides free primary health care and preventative health education programs to low-income and uninsured families and individuals in the Detroit area.
Current Project - Sewing Seeds, Growing Futures
GlobeMed at the University of Michigan is currently working with Tiyatien Health in Zwedru, Liberia to help provide microloans to individuals of the community. Microloaning to local entrepreneurs will empower the local community to be self-sufficient and allow them access to better healthcare, food, education, and improved socioeconomic conditions which will ultimately lead to a healthier and more productive community. The chapter is also volunteering in the Joy-Southfield Health Clinic, performing data analysis and continuing to moderate health education classes.
Our Impact
The money raised from microloans in Zwedru, Liberia for Tiyatien Health will go toward buying peanut seeds for TH’s Patient Support Group to develop a peanut farming business, as well as sewing machines to help train 100 additional women for The Rural Women’s Initiative which makes and sells low cost clothing. By working with families in Detroit, the chapter helps them understand how to manage chronic conditions and promote healthy life styles. On the campus of the University of Michigan, GlobeMed helps to educate students and members of the surrounding community about the issues related to health in Detroit, Liberia, and the rest of the world.
